Day hike description
Join us for a festive winter walk from Kew to Kingston upon Thames, combining leafy riverside scenery, the Thames Path and a fantastic Christmas market finish.
We’ll start in Kew and make our way towards the Thames, passing through the Kew/Richmond riverside area before following the river upstream towards Kingston. Expect a relaxed and scenic winter route with plenty of Thames views before we arrive in the historic heart of Kingston.
🎄 Our destination: Kingston Christmas Market
Our walk finishes in Kingston’s Ancient Market Place, where the traditional town square is transformed into a European-style Christmas market. The organisers describe it as a European-style market in a traditional British setting, complete with twinkling fairy lights, festive stalls, food, drink and entertainment.
Once we arrive, you'll have time to explore and enjoy:
🍷 Mulled wine and seasonal drinks
🌭 Continental bratwurst and hog roasts
🥞 Dutch pancakes and international street food
🎁 Christmas gifts and unique independent retailers
✨ Traditional festive market stalls and fairy lights
🎶 Live local bands, Christmas choirs and entertainment
There are also Bavarian-style curling lanes and a carousel among the attractions listed for the 2026 market.
🏛️ Christmas in Ancient Market Place
The setting is part of what makes this one a little different. The market takes place in Ancient Market Place, a historic trading square in Kingston. One current guide notes that the square has been used for trading for more than 850 years.
So wrap up warm and join us for a winter walk along the Thames followed by a taste of European Christmas right in the heart of Kingston.
