Day Three - Summit Ben Nevis, highest mountain in the UK
Before breakfast, the Event WhatsApp Group will share complete details of the expected weather and the day's options.
08:00 Buffet breakfast
09:00 Depart the accommodation. Today we will depart to summit Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom (1345m). This can prove quite a challenge, but the reality is it’s not as hard as you might image with the right mindset. The route we take in the popular route, which is linear and well populated be other hikers to help motivate you. Theres definitely safety in numbers. We usually have a mountain leader leading the way and one bringing up the rear. Both in contact over our VHF radios. Should anyone decide to turnaround we can usually manage this.
Look out for the Snow Buntings on the summit. These small birds breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a rare sight in the UK, found mainly in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. But you can usually spot one or two on the summit.
The alternative for those not wishing to summit Ben Nevis, theres the moderate option to hike within Glen Nevis with its An Steall waterfall and rope bridge challenge.
Following the day’s hikes, we will all reconvene at the accommodation.
19:00 Dinner at another venue we have previously visited with guests in past years.
Day Four - Explore the Isle of Kerrera and Oban
Before breakfast, the Event WhatsApp Group will share complete details of the expected weather and the day's options.
08:00 Buffet breakfast
09:00 Today, we would like to offer a selection of sights with hikes. Our Oban day usually follows the Ben Nevis day as it gives those muscles time to recover.
We will take the 60 minute drive to Oban, stopping briefly to enjoy the views of Stalker Castle. We will then pass through Oban to the ferry port for the short ferry to Kerrera Island. Prior to boarding this small foot passenger ferry we will split into two groups, those wishing to take the longer route to the Gylen Castle on the south of the Island and those looking for a more relaxing shorter walk. Both will converge at the Tea Rooms before we make our way back to the ferry.
While on Kerrera keep an eye out for a unique piece of history. You might come across the site of TAT-1, the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable. Laid between Kerrera and Newfoundland, it was inaugurated in 1956 and could carry just 35 simultaneous calls, a marvel of its time.
After lunch and having made our way back to the vehicles we will venture into Oban. There are many delights to be sampled here from the Seafood Hut to Obans own homemade chocolate shop. Theres also the Oban Distillery, but this always requires booking in advance.
19:00 Dinner at another great dinner venue.
Day Five - Visit Glenfinnan Viaduct and hike the Glenfinnan Estate
Before breakfast, the Event WhatsApp Group will share complete details of the expected weather and the day's options.
08:00 Buffet breakfast
09:00 Today, we will depart for a drive to Glenfinnan with its impressive Viaduct, made famous by one of the Harry Potter movies. Hopefully we will arrive on time to see the jacobite steam train crossing it. we will commence a hike along the Glen of the same name. This is an easy hike up the Glen to a bothy. For those unfamiliar with bothies, this is a well maintained bothy, popular with thru hikers making their way from Fort William to Inverie where a pub awaits them at the finish. Often referred to as the longest walk to the remotest pub in the UK. The both and route also marks day two or three of the three week Cape Wrath route to northern Scotland. Undoubtedly the hardest long distance route in the UK.
However, our day hike will be more gentle and certainly scenic as we will finish at the Glenfinnan Monument which stands proudly on the shores of Loch Shiel, and marks the very spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie began his audacious 1745 Jacobite Rising. Built 70 years after the clan gathering, is a tribute to the courage and hope of the Highlanders who fought to restore the Stuarts to the throne.
19:00 Dinner at another great dinner venue.
Day Six - Explore the Hidden valley of Glencoe and summit the Pap of Glencoe
Before breakfast, the Event WhatsApp Group will share complete details of the expected weather and the day's options.
08:00 Buffet breakfast
Today we have a number of possible hike combinations. One of our favorite hikes is the Pap of Glencoe, so named as it has a distinctive conical shape resembling a breast, particularly when viewed from the west. Regardless of it’s inappropriate naming once the summit is reached it provided the "classic" view of the entrance to Glen Coe and a full 360 view stretching to ben Nevis and beyond.
One of the alternative hikes is to the Hidden Valley, or formerly known as Coire Gabhail, served as a natural fortress and used by the Macdonald clan to conceal cattle—whether their own or stolen from rivals like the Campbells. This secluded refuge became a tragic sanctuary during the 1692 Massacre of Glencoe, when the surviving clansmen fled here from the government soldiers members of the Campbell Clan during winter blizzard as their homes burned below.
The final walk, rather than a hike, is around the peaceful lakes and forests of nestled just north of Glencoe village, Glencoe Lochan is a stunning piece of the Canadian wilderness lovingly recreated in the Scottish Highlands. In the 1890s. Lord Strathcona planted this forest with trees from the Pacific Northwest to ease his wife Isabella's profound homesickness for her native land. Today, this tranquil haven offers serene walking trails and brown trout fishing, and stands as a beautiful testament to devotion and a longing for home.
